UPMC St. Margaret

Mary C. Barkhymer, MSN, MHA, RN, NEA-BC, CNOR is the Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer for UPMC St. Margaret since March 2011, with over 35 years of progressive experience in nursing leadership and hospital operations.

Ms. Barkhymer served as a leader in the achievement of the hospital’s Magnet® recognition in 2009 and in her role as CNO, achieved Magnet® Re-designation in September 2014 and for a third time in June 2019. Mary presently serves as a Magnet® Appraiser.

Mary currently serves on the systemwide surgical services service line leadership team and leads the systemwide patient mobility initiative.

Mary received her MSN from Waynesburg University and is a Certified Operating Room Nurse.

In 2010, Mary was selected to serve at the national level as one of the Top 25 Surgical Nursing Executives for the AORN and continues to date.

Mary serves as preceptor for DNP and Master’s practicum students.

Organizational memberships include: American Organization Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association – local and national, South Western Pennsylvania Organization Nurse Leaders and the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) – local and national.
